Repetune - The Songs of our Heads

The authors write about the songs that get stuck in their heads for your entertainment and their own sanity.

Mike and Kim - Daylight

Written by Thaddeus

July2

Ok, generally I try to stay with the older repetunes.  You know, the ones that have been bouncing around in my head for 30-plus years or so, but sometimes there are newer songs that deserve a spot here too.  Now the top 40 tunes you are still burned out on but leave it to Madison Ave to find us a catchy little gem.

Now the words here are not very important, we all know the song but do you know any of the words besides ‘daylight?”  I didn’t think so.

We cut the legs off our pants/ thew our shoes into the ocean”

That first line really says it all.  If you had not gathered from the cheesy keyboard intro that this was going to be a whimsical little song I think those lines let the cat out of the bag.  It is just a song about taking a carefree look at life.

Slip and slide on subway grates/ these shoes are poor man’s ice skates

or

I have 5 clocks in my life/ only one has the right time

Just in case you are wondering, yes, Mike and Kim are a real life couple.  From the looks of it, a very much in love couple that ,darn it, are just happy to be here.  Ah, to be young and in love with the world layed out in front of you.  Not to be nasty but I would kinda like to be there when the reality of life its them upside the head like a methed up trucker with a 2 by 4.  Oh, I am so cynical.  Till then, though, I’d love to trade places with them.

and in the daylight we can hitchhike to Maine/ I hope someday to see without these frames

Too often it is the sad or dressing songs that get stuck in our heads.  It’s nice to have a bright, bouncy one in there from time to time.  Not only does that poppy little beat stick, it is impossible to stay in a bad mood while it plays.

Cavo - Champagne

Cavo - Champagne - Single - Champagne

I need you here with me. Don’t take this too far now. Your eyes seem so lonely. Inside you feel like you lost your mind.

The irony of this repetune is that I for some reason actually believe that the one I shall not speak of was involved with substance, initiated by myself, which escalated into non-communication and deceit.

“Could’ve been the champagne, the champagne. Could’ve been the cocaine, the cocaine. Could’ve been the way you looked at me that told me we were through. Through!

To find out that this is actually true would tear me apart even more.

Fat Boy Slim - Weapon of Choice

Fatboy Slim - Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars - Weapon of Choice

This morning when I woke up and was taking a shower a repetune came to me and before I knew it I was dancing naked through the house and out on the deck.  Luckily I live a bit into the woods but now the squirrels won’t come around and the dog is afraid but I just couldn’t help it.  That jamming little beat makes me want to dance.

Now when it comes to lyrics I really would not consider it a break through in the use of the English language or very deep.

Break, eject, eject, eject

and

For they catch ya

Now that does not really enlighten me on the human condition but it is most of the words.  That’s ok because it’s not about them any, it’s about the music it’s self.  That blend of 30’s big band mix with modern dance  makes you want to move.  It’s like Tommy Dorsey and Moby had a love child

Now if all those lyrics have messed up your goove you can always go with the instrumental version, but I like to live on the edge so I can get the chorus and where the title comes from.

Don’t be shocked by the tone of my voice/Check out my new weapon, my weapon of choice

Of course there are a few more lyrics to it but the make as much sense as the first ones do.  If lyrics are your thing you can check out the version featuring Bootsy Colins, it’s filled with them but I like this one just fine.  So, please excuse me now, I have a repetune in my head and it is time to put on my zoot suit and go dancing.

Cake - Never There

Cake - Prolonging the Magic - Never There

I need your arms around me, I need to feel your touch. I need your understanding, I need your love so much. You tell me that you love me so, you tell me that you care, but when I need you baby, you’re never there.

I kept telling myself that you truly meant it when you said you wanted me. Your deceit created a wound that doesn’t seem to heal.

On the phone long, long distance always through such strong resistance. First you say you’re too busy, I wonder if you even miss me.

Early morning phone calls, good evening texts, and the occasional mix tape sent through the mail; all of these actions were by-products of my unconditional love.

Drivin N Cryin - Honeysuckle Blue

Drivin' n' Cryin' - Mystery Road - Honeysuckle Blue

Whenever I hear those thundering chords that kick of this repetune, I know Kevin Kinney will be singing in my head all day about being lost (metaphorically) in the south.  You can even hear a little Allman Brothers in it.  When I was in college in Atlanta every college cover band used to do this song.  This one and ‘It’s the End of the World as We Know It’, but that one is for another day.

Have ever seen the Blue Ridge Mountains, boy, or the Chattahoochee

Now let me explain this real quick.  It’s ‘Blue’, like the music of depression, isolation, and hopelessness.  But it also means ‘Bloom’ in the song as well, as in rebirth and hope.  It’s really kinda clever (because there is no blue honeysuckle in the south)

Feel the southern breezes and the southern winds/ blowin’ round this dying land

This is one of the few songs that has a video that follows the song pretty closely, in this case the you that fee to the city looking for something more.

A boy fifteen, nothing in his pockets

You see that a lot in Atlanta, not like New York or L.A. but here too.  Kids getting chewed up by the city an left disillusioned along with the older folks it happened to long ago.

An old hotel serves like a shelter for children of the street

It sounds a little depressing but it is really a hopeful song.  Kinney offers the kids a welcome home back to the land of clean sheets and tree lined streets.

I’ll show you where the dog woods bloom it’s true

And it is not just an offer to the rag-a-muffin kids either but to anyone that needs to get away from that life.

I got a ticket in my pocket for the corner man, he’s never been

That blend of hard electric guitars, strummed acoustic guitars and a message of hope ring in your head over and over, making it a great repetune

Paramore - Decode

Paramore - Twilight (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) - Decode

How can I decide what’s right when you’re clouding up my mind? I can’t win, you’re losing sight all the time. Not gonna ever own what’s mine when you’re always taking sides. But you won’t take away my pride. No, not this time. Not this time.

I’ve discovered the hard way that it doesn’t matter how many days or months two people have been together. If one truly loves the other, unconditionally, a heart can be broken after mere minutes.

How did we get here? I used to know you so well. How did we get here? Well, I think I know.

I’m in a bookstore for goodness sake, why is this repetune playing now? I can suddenly feel Hayley’s, or should I say Bella’s, pain. It is my pain as well.

Seether - Like Suicide

Seether - Finding Beauty In Negative Spaces - Like Suicide

Premeditation will kill the trust. They’ll never know if you fear me. With every second collecting dust, I feel so bloated and weary. ‘Cause she belongs to heaven.

Substance or love…what is this repetune’s inspiration?

She’s comin’ over like a suicide. And it’s the same old trip, the same old trip as before. Another complicating suicide. And it’s the same old trip, the same old trip as before.

Can it possibly be about both? In my experience, love is the worst drug of all.

Incubus - Stellar

Incubus - Monuments and Melodies - Stellar

Meet me in outer space. We could spend the night; watch the earth come up. I’ve grown tired of that place; won’t you come with me? We could start again.

It was sorta deja vu; the whole moving experience. I’d rather not think too deeply about the subject, but it seems as if I had just been in the same situation with the one I shall not speak of less than a year ago. How do I end up in these situations?

How do you do it? Make me feel like I do. How do you do it? It’s better than I ever knew.

Lifting furniture, packing boxes, drinking energy drinks, with the radio turned on blast.

Kings of Leon - Use Somebody

Kings of Leon - Only By the Night (Deluxe Version) - Use Somebody

I’ve been roaming around always looking down at all I see. Painted faces, building places I cant reach. You know that I could use somebody. You know that I could use somebody.

Am I surprised that I awake with this repetune in my head? It’s on the radio every 30 minutes.

Someone like you, and all you know, and how you speak. Countless lovers under cover of the street. You know that I could use somebody. You know that I could use somebody. Someone like you.

Perhaps the surprise is due to the absence of pain I feel all of a sudden? Did this song really ease my heart? Or, is the one that turned me on to this song the cause for the smile on my face?

Chevelle - Wonder What's Next (Deluxe Version) - Comfortable Liar

Broad, is this sea. The salt, enters the wounds. My take, on you is simple.

Here we go again. The pain never seems to subside. However, I now believe I know why.

So heal, your fear, to heal, your fear.

Was I in denial? Or, did I truly believe that I couldn’t be betrayed by you?
